Writer: Camilla Egeberg Not too long ago, I wrote a bachelor's thesis on the challenges of aftercare in child welfare services. Since then, I have been interested in what information is given to young people about aftercare, how it is given and when it is given. Many child protection children I know, including myself, have either not received information about aftercare or have had aftercare without being fully aware of it or fully understanding what it entails. Many also say that they declined aftercare without fully understanding what they were declining. Throughout the work on the thesis, it became clear that the reasons for challenges such as these are more about the child welfare service's finances and capacity, rather than their will and desire to offer the children the best. The challenge related to the information provided to young people about aftercare was further raised in the Løvetannakademiet and we agreed to explore a possible solution to this. We began to develop a concept where the goal was to assist child welfare services in meeting the need of child protection children for abundant and, not least, adapted and well-disseminated information about aftercare. In addition, it was important that this was an affordable offer for child protection services.
Our solution became the service Aftercare workshop - a workshop where child welfare services can send their young people as a group to learn about laws, rules, benefits and challenges related to aftercare. Information is conveyed through lectures and group work designed to reach young people in the best possible way. Not least, the young people are guided through the process by workshop leaders who have themselves been children in care and experienced the good and bad days of aftercare. The aftercare workshop conveys information that can advantageously be given to several young people at the same time, this also gives the young people a great opportunity to meet, talk and work together with others in the same situation, which we at Løvetannakademiet see as a big plus. Our aim with the Aftercare Workshop is to provide young people with good information about what aftercare is and to give them a good basis for discussing aftercare with their child welfare service.
